A Day Out in Glasgow

Last week my dad made a quick visit to Glasgow, and although we only had one full day to spend together, we managed to see and do some of my favourite things here. And most importantly to catch up and just spend time together. Last Wednesday was the only full day, and as I had my camera with me from morning to evening I decided to show and tell about our day here on the blog as well. Here are also some nice Glasgow tips if any of you ever visit the city!

Gordon Street Cafe, Glasgow
Glasgow Central Station, Gordon Street Cafe

Päivä alkoi totta kai aamiaisen ja kahvittelun merkeissä. Olin jo etukäteen katsonut meille kivan aamupalapaikan valmiiksi, ja treffattiinkin Central Stationin sisällä olevassa Gordon Street Caféssa, joka löytyy suunnilleen jokaiselta 'best coffee in Glasgow' -listalta. Kahvila paahtaa käyttämänsä kahvipavut itse paikan päällä, joten ei ihme että aamulatte maistui ihan erityisen hyvältä. Kahvila on sisustukseltaankin ihan mun makuun: sopivasti uutta ja vanhaa industrial-tyyliin, paria marmoripöytää unohtamatta ;) Yläkerrassa huriseva kahvipaahdin vielä levittää ihanaa kahvin tuoksua, mikä tuo kahvilaan ihan oman tunnelmansa.

The day naturally started with breakfast and morning coffees. I had already spotted a nice place for us beforehand, and so we headed to Gordon Street Café, which is listed on pretty much every single 'best coffee in Glasgow' -list and located just inside Glasgow Central Station. The cafe actually roasts the coffee beans it uses in house, so no wonder the morning latte tasted so good. The decor of the cafe is also just how I like it: a good balance of old and new in industrial style, without forgetting a couple of marble tables ;) And the coffee roaster spreads the scent of coffee around, which makes the whole atmosphere even better.

Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum, Glasgow

Glasgow'n museot on muuten suurimmaksi osaksi täysin ilmaisia!

From Central Station we started walking to West End (which by the way is my absolute favourite area here!), and there our first stop was Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. I've visited a few of the museums in Glasgow, but this is by far my favourite one! There's so much to see whether you're interested in history, art or natural science. And the building itself is worth of seeing too, so if the actual collections aren't exactly your thing then just visit to see the beautiful architecture both inside and outside. Oh, and most of the museums in Glasgow are completely free!

What to see in Glasgow: Botanic Gardens
Tea Room at the Botanics, Glasgow, cappuccino
Glasgow guide: Botanic Gardens

Kelvingrovelta otettiin suunnaksi Botanic Gardens, jossa kävin itse ensimmäisen kerran vasta muutama viikko sitten. Lisäsin silloin mun Instagramiin muutamia kuvia ja videoita paikasta, ja niiden perusteella iskä itse ehdottikin täällä käymistä. Teki niiiin hyvää päästä taas hetkeksi vähän trooppisempaan ilmastoon, ja kyllä siinä hymy nousi huulille kun sisään astuessa vastaan tulvahti ihanan kesäinen kukkien tuoksu. Botanic Gardensin kasvikokoelmasta bongattiin tuttujen orkideojen ja hyasinttien lisäksi muun muassa vanilja, kurkuma ja aloe vera. Tää on myöskin place to go jos instagrammattavuus on yksi kriteeri nähtävyyksiä valitessa ;) Suositus myös Tea Room at the Botanicsin keitolle ja cappuccinolle!

Botanic Gardensilta lähdettiin kävelemään Great Western Roadia pitkin takaisin keskustaan, ja matkan varrella poikettiin The Glasgow Vintage Co. -liikkeessä.

Meidän päivän viimeinen varsinainen etappi oli aivan keskustassa sijaitseva The Lighthouse. Rakennus toimii muun muassa näyttelytilana ja tapahtumapaikkana, mutta ainakin mun mielestä rakennuksen paras juttu on ylhäältä avautuvat mielettömät näkymät kaupungin kattojen ylle. Muutamat portaat saa kiivetä, mutta näköala on pienen reisitreenin arvoinen ;) Arkkitehtuurista kiinnostuneille täältä löytyy paljon tietoa Charles Rennie Mackintoshista, jolla on ollut ihan huikea vaikutus Glasgow'n historiaan. Mackintosh on Glasgow'lle ehkä jotain samanlaista kuin Alvar Aalto on Suomelle.

From Kelvingrove we headed to Botanic Gardens, where I visited for the first time only a few weeks ago myself. I added a few pictures and videos to my Instagram back then, and because of those my dad suggested visiting the place too. It felt soooo good to escape to a more tropical climate again and the summery scent of flowers made me smile immediately after stepping inside. From the plant selection we spotted the common orchids and hyacinths, but also vanilla, turmeric, and aloe vera. This is also the place to go if you need some place instagrammable ;) I can also recommend the Tea Room at the Botanics soup and cappuccino!

After seeing the Botanic Gardens we started walking along Great Western Road back to the city centre, and made a quick stop at Glasgow Vintage Co. This vintage boutique was recommended to me a few weeks ago and I've been wanting to visit ever since, so now that it was conveniently along the way I finally got to go. There's a lot of different vintage boutiques and events in Glasgow, but this is definitely the best one I've seen so far. The products are in good condition, the boutique looks clean and appealing, and they give students a 10% discount on already very affordable prices. Of course I didn't leave empty handed, but ended up with a 9£ cashmere sweater in my shopping bag ;)

The last proper stop of our day was The Lighthouse in the city centre. The building operates as a exhibition and event venue for instance, but I think the best thing the building has to offer is the amazing view from the top of the building. You do have to climb a few stairs, but the view really is worth a little leg workout ;) And if you're interested in architecture, in here you'll find a lot of information on Charles Rennie Mackintosh who has had a huge impact on the history and architecture of Glasgow.

Drum & Monkey, Glasgow
Glasgow pub: Drum & Monkey

After the intense stair workout we charged our phones' as well as our own batteries in dad's hotel room for a while before heading out for dinner. This time I let my dad to pick the place, so we ended up dining in Drum & Monkey pub in the city centre. I'm yet to adopt the traditional British pub culture and I don't see myself sitting in pubs with a drink in my hand frequently any time soon, but Drum & Monkey was definitely a positive surprise! The place didn't look like the traditional pub at the corner, but they had chandeliers hanging from the ceiling and the whole atmosphere was generally more sophisticated than what you'd initially think when hearing the word 'pub'. A few men in suits stopped for a beer during our dinner as well. So if you're like me and don't find the idea of a dirty old pub that appealing but still want to have the pub experience, Drum & Monkey is definitely something I can recommend. The only downside was the lack of vegetarian options on the menu, and I think there were in total two meatless dishes. But then again, veggie food probably isn't the most natural and traditional pub cuisine, so therefore the limited options are understandable. I went for macaroni & cheese, that tasted really good after a long day of walking around.

What to eat, see and do in Glasgow

So that was our day out in Glasgow! I hope you enjoyed hearing and seeing a bit more about this new hometown of mine, and do let me know (e.g. via Instagram) if you're ever around!
