Fashion World in 2022

Postaus sisältää mainoslinkkejä* // This post contains ad links*

What will the fashion world look like in 2022? And now I don't mean the trends or the clothes, rather the business side of things and the bigger picture. What kind of news and announcements will we see this coming year, and which will be the things stirring up and changing the fashion world the most? Here are my predictions of what we'll see and hear from the world of fashion in 2022.

Mitä tapahtuu muodin maailmassa vuonna 2022?

Louis Vuitton miehet & Off-White Virgil Abloh'n jälkeen

Pari viikkoa sitten muotimaailmaa järisytti suru-uutinen Off White -brändin perustajan ja Louis Vuittonin miesten malliston taiteellisen johtajan Virgil Abloh'n poismenosta.

Uudet CEO:t Burberry & Chanel

What happens in the fashion world in 2022?

Louis Vuitton Men & Off-White after Virgil Abloh

A couple of weeks ago the fashion world was struck with sad news, as Virgil Abloh, the Off-White founder and artistic director of Louis Vuitton men, sadly passed away. Virgil was truly a pioneer, and e.g. the rise of reverence for street fashion and bringing it quite seamlessly into the luxury segment is maybe mostly thanks to the work of Virgil. He's been dubbed as Karl Lagerfeld of his time, and it will be interesting to see what moves are Off-White and Louis Vuitton going to make after Virgil.

New CEO:s: Burberry & Chanel

There's even more movement within the luxury brands and their lead personnel, and at least Burberry and Chanel have recently named new CEO:s. Jonathan Akeroyd is currently leading Burberry, whereas Alain Wertheimer has been named the global CEO at Chanel where she moves from Unilever. So soon we'll see, in which direction these two very traditional brands with long history and heritage will go.

Muotiviikot: järjestetäänkö ja mikä on niiden merkitys?

Muotiviikkojen merkityksestä on puhuttu jo pitkään.

Fashion weeks: will there be any and what's the purpose anyway?

The purpose of fashion weeks has been a topic of conversation for a few seasons already. They don't have the same kind of glam and exclusivity to them that they used to have in the past. And personally I'm not that keen into following all the shows and fashion week shenanigans anymore either. Indeed, what is the purpose of fashion weeks these days when new collections are launched significantly more often than just a couple of times a year, on which the whole fashion week concept is based on. And then we obviously have this freaking pandemic, that still imposes its own challenges to arranging fashion weeks in the first place.

Virtual fashion

There's been a lot of conversation around virtual fashion for some time now, and the hype around it is only  growing stronger. My personal prediction is that next year we will see and hear big news regarding virtual fashion. I wouldn't be surprised if fashion brands partnered up with e.g. Instagram with a higher intensity, and soon all of us could virtually wear clothes from different brands using filters and other features. There's already some features like this available on different platforms, but one of the biggest question marks probably still is the copyright laws. However, I'm sure that the rise of virtual fashion is not going to stop here, rather it will just accelerate. An indicator of this is e.g. the fact that Nike just recently acquired the virtual fashion start-up RTFKT. And we also have virtual fashion knowledge here in Finland: about a month ago a virtual fashion conference Exthereal was hosted in Helsinki for the first time.

Vastuullisuus

Vastuullisuus on tällä hetkellä jokaisen brändin ja yrityksen fokuksena. Jopa yksi ehkä kaikkein pahimman maineen saaneista pikamuotibrändeistä SheIn on nimittänyt Head of Sustainabilityn.

Sustainability

Sustainability is in the focus of every brand just now. Even one of maybe the 'worst' fast-fashion brands of all, SheIn, has named a Head of Sustainability. If this doesn't tell about the fact that every single fashion brand is currently striving to bring forward the sustainability steps they're taking, then I don't know what does. I'm sure that next year we will be getting big news around sustainability from many different brands. However, what brands communicate outwards and what actually happens within the company is a whole different question. But I do also believe that these days consumers are so woke and aware, and will bring forward the defects and green washing they see, that especially bigger brands can't afford to say one thing and do something else.

Kuinka muoti muuttuu vuonna 2022 // How will fashion change in 2022

Manna & Co.

Ja sitten yksi super kiinnostava uusi seurattava toimija meiltä Suomesta, nimittäin Manna & Co.! Manna & Co. on suomalainen brändiyhtiö, jonka alla ovat Makia, Finlayson, Vallila, Reino & Aino ja Sasta. Manna & Co.:n tavoitteena on erityisesti brändien kansainvälistäminen ja ylipäätään kasvu, nimenomaan yhdessä tekien ja yhdistetyillä voimilla. Brändit siis edelleen jatkavat erillisinä, mutta yhdistetyillä resursseilla kasvupotentiaali on huomattavasti parempi. Lisää Suomi-muotia maailmalle siis! Niin ja olihan Vogue Scandinaviassakin juttu Myssyfarmista. Toivottavasti tällaisia kansainvälistymisuutisia kuullaan suomalaisilta muotibrändeiltä vielä enemmän vuonna 2022.

Manna & Co.

And then one super interesting company to have on your radar directly from Finland: Manna & Co.! Manna & Co. is a Finnish holding company, which houses the brands Makia, Finlayson, Vallila, Reino & Aino and Sasta. The goal of the company is especially to help these brands internationalise and grow in general, precisely by joining forces and doing things together. So the brands will continue as separate entities, but with combined resources the growth potential is on a whole another level. So more Finnish fashion out to the world! And Finnish brands are gaining traction overseas already, e.g. Vogue Scandinavia recently featured Myssyfarmi, which is a Finnish company basically all about grandmas knitting cool woollen beanies. I hope we will hear more great news like this of Finnish brands going international in 2022.

  1. It quite interesting what going on in the fashion world. I think by next year with the fashion week (perhaps New York Fashion Week) may do some NFT with their clothes so people can wear virtually. Now I personally think that Moschino may end up leading the fashion world it going more bold and unapologetic. I do hope Chanel does something a bit more interesting when it comes to their collection.

    1. It really is, isn't it? That's a very interesting and good point about Moschino, but I definitely see where you're coming from! All we can do is to wait and see what 2022 brings, but I'm sure it'll definitely be an interesting one.
