Bermudashortsit, vyölaukut, turistisandaalit, lenkkarit, suorat ja bootcut-malliset farkut... Kun miettii näitä tämänkin vuoden isoimpia trendejä ja sitä tyylisuuntaa johon kadulla törmää yhä useammin ja useammin niin ainoa termi joka mulla tulee mieleen on dad fashion.
Bermuda shorts, bumbags, tourist sandals, sneakers, straight and bootcut jeans... When you think about some of the biggest trends of this year and the styles you come across on the streets more and more often, the only term I can think of is dad fashion.

Kaikkein kovimpia dad fashion -pukeutujia tuntuu olevan nuoret Z-sukupolven edustajat. Tosin siinä ehkä juuri onkin se juju, että koska 2000-luvulla syntyneet eivät muista sitä aikaa kun vanhemmat on pukeutunut suoralahkeisiin farkkuihin, vyölaukkuihin ja kaikenmaailman terveys- ja turistisandaaleihin, niin heillä tähän tyyliin ei myöskään liity mitään erityisiä muistoja - niin hyvässä kuin pahassakin. Loistava esimerkki on oma vuonna 2006 syntynyt pikkusiskoni, joka hyvin usein näyttää siltä kuin olisi tullut suoraan Frendien kuvauksista. Ja tiedän että siskoni on myös ihan oikeasti käynyt meidän isän vaatekaapilla paitavarkaissa.
The most hardcore dad fashion fans seem to be Gen Z-ers. Then again, maybe the hook is in the fact that as these people are born in the 2000s, they do not remember the time when the older generations dressed in bootcut jeans, bumbags and all kinds of good-for-your-feet sandals on the daily. And so they don't have any personal memories about those - whether in good or bad. A great example is my little sister who was born in 2006, and now almost every time we see each other she looks like she's coming from Friends shoot. And I know for a fact, that my sister has also raided our dad's shirt collection.
90-luvun muoti & nostalgia
Mutta kuten tiedetään ja huomataan, niin ei ne teinit kuitenkaan niitä ainoita 90-luvun tyyliin pukeutuvia ole vaikka eletäänkin vuotta 2021. Kyllä ne shortsit, farkut, laukut, lenkkarit ja sandaalit iskee nimittäin myös meihin milleniaaleihin, vaikka omasta lapsuudesta edelleen muistankin kuinka vanhemmat ja muut aikuiset pukeutuivat juuri tähän tyyliin. Tietynlainen nostalgia ja turvallisuuden tunne saattavatkin olla osasyynä siihen, miksi nimenomaan juuri nyt lapsuudesta tutut elementit vetoavat meihin. Toki muoti ja trendit kiertää aina ympyrää ja samat jutut nousevat pinnalle sykleissä, mutta jotenkin en voi olla ajattelematta että varmasti nyt tähän epävarmaan aikaan haetaan ehkä alitajuisesti turvallisuuden tuntua kotoisalta ja lapsuudesta tutuilta tuntuvista asioista.
90s fashion & nostalgia
But as we know and can see here too, it's not only teenagers who dress in 90s styles even though we're living in 2021. Those shorts, jeans, bags, sneakers and sandals do draw us millennials in too, even though I still remember from my childhood how my parents and other adults wore exactly these same items back then. A certain kind of nostalgia and feeling of security might be the reasons why it is exactly now that the elements we remember from our childhood appeal to us again. Yes, fashion and trends go in cycles and items come in and go out of fashion in frequent phases, but I cannot help thinking that as we now live in these uncertain times maybe we subconsciously seek the feeling of security from the things that feel homey and evoke the same kind of safe feeling as when we were children.
En olisi itse ehkä uskonut, että vielä joskus tulen pukeutumaan kuin vanhempani 90-luvulla, mutta mieli ja ajat muuttuvat ja tässä sitä ollaan bermudat ja Birkenstockit jalassa. Ja rakastan molempia. Ostin nämä bermudashortsit oikeastaan sillä ajatuksella, että voin pitää niitä toimistolla sillä tämä hieman pidempi malli tuntuu töihin sopivammalta kuin muut huomattavasti lyhyemmät shortsini. Mutta loppujen lopuksi onkin käynyt niin, että bermudashortseja on tullut käytettyä oikeastaan enemmän vapaa-ajalla ja viikonloppuisin. Se tosin osoittaa vain shortsien monikäyttöisyyden, eli täällä jatketaan bermudojen käyttöä ja pukeutumista samalla tavalla kuin äiti ja iskä 90-luvulla niin kauan kuin säät sallivat ja lapsuusnostalgia vetoaa.
I personally wouldn't have thought that I'd ever be dressing like my parents did in the 1990s, but our minds and times change, and here I am dressed in a pair of Bermuda shorts and Birkenstocks. And I love both. I initially bought the shorts with the idea of wearing them to the office as they feel a tad more office appropriate than my other, a lot shorter pairs of shorts. However, I've eventually worn these more outside the office on my free time and on weekends. But that goes to show the versatility of them, so I will be continuing wearing my bermudas and dressing like my mum and dad in the 90s for as long as the weather allows and I need that bit of childhood nostalgia in my life.
