5 Things I've Done to Reduce My Stress Levels This Spring

Last autumn stress hit me stronger than ever before. Towards the end of the year I actually experienced a few quite scary moments when a sudden strong pain hit me on my chest. A couple of times I also bursted out crying purely because I was feeling so stressed out and under pressure. Of course university studies are at times stressful for everyone, but some of the stress I experienced last autumn was caused by myself. I wanted to go further, achieve more and be better. However, learning from my mistakes I decided that I'm not going to let the same thing happen this semester. And so during this spring I've been learning to be a little bit more gentle towards myself and paid attention especially to managing and reducing stress. Here are the five things that have helped me, and I hope these will be useful and helpful for you too!

1. Frequent yoga / movement. At the start of the year I finally got myself a membership to a yoga studio where I've been going approximately once a week. Alongside going to the studio I've also been attending free Sweaty Betty and lululemon classes once or twice a week. Usually these classes are a yoga practice, but sometimes they mix it up with pilates or boxing for example. Walks with a friend or running in the sunny park have also helped me to clear my head when I've felt like I've needed it. However, nothing will get my mind off of things as well as a hot yoga class where I'm concentrating solely on my practice and breathing.

2. Sleep pattern and hygiene. This spring I've been sticking to a regular sleep pattern and hygiene so well, that nowadays my body wakes up and gets tired naturally almost at exactly the same time no matter the day of the week. Last autumn I noticed how big of an impact having gotten enough shut eye has on my ability to manage stress, so that is something I haven't been sacrificing this spring.

3. Lukeminen.

3. Reading. During the past months I've gotten back into the habit of reading again (reading meaning other than study books), and that has definitely had an influence on my stress levels! It feels so good to actually read for pleasure and not just academic texts all the time. I've also stopped to scroll social media as the last thing before falling to sleep, and taken a book or a magazine into my hands instead. So reading has helped me to manage and reduce stress through the improved quality of sleep if nothing else! Oh, and I also don't open Instagram or other social media channels the first things when I wake up in the morning, but only after I've gotten up and feel a bit more awake.

4. Making time for friends. This spring I've made more time for seeing friends outside of university too when compared to last autumn. Coffee dates, movie nights, dinners and walks with friends have given me something else to think and do than just assignments all the time. Under stress and pressure I have a habit of withdrawing from others and just work work work alone, but in reality socialising and seeing my friends is exactly what gives me more energy.

5. Aikatauluttaminen / ajoissa oleminen.

5. Scheduling / starting early. The best way to reduce stress is to avoid it to begin with! When I know what assignments I've got coming up and when is the deadline for each, it's a lot easier to schedule time for studying and other things around it. I'm also the type of person who prefers to start working on things early to give myself enough time, just so I don't wake up to the realisation of having done nothing two days before the deadline. I also schedule my days in a way that I don't do uni work after 9 or 10 in the evenings. I just don't work well and can't concentrate fully in the evenings, and I want to keep my nights free for taking some time for myself and reading blogs or watching Youtube or Netflix for instance.

There you go, those are my five tips on managing and reducing stress, let me know if you have any other tips to add to the list! And good luck to my fellow students for these last weeks of spring semester, and to everyone else too! ♥︎

  1. Tosi kiva ja tärkeä postaus, koska stressiä on varmasti aika ajoin itse kullakin. Mulle parasta stressinhallintaa on koiran kanssa lenkkeily metsässä. Kevät, auringonpaiste ja linnunlaulu piristää ihanasti!

  3. Love these tips hun, I do good with my sleep pattern but lack in some of the other areas and that's something I'd really like to change. I always find reading so relaxing and it really does help with stress - I just need to make more time for it! Especially in the evenings before bed!

    1. Thank you Chantelle, so glad to hear you liked my tips! ♥︎ And it's just about getting into that habit, isn't it?! I really struggled with resisting the urge to pick up my phone at first, but now I usually don't even want to but gravitate towards my book quite naturally :) xx

  4. Having a proper sleep pattern and making time to see your friends are both so important to reduce your stress. I also couldn't agree more on taking time to do some kind of exercise, that's the only thing I should probably invest a bit more time into whenever I'm stressed. Love this blog post Pinja, you're also looking lovely as always! xx
