My Experiences with Loneliness

Last week I listened to a podcast and read a blogpost that both had loneliness as their topic. Loneliness is something that I have experienced too, and so I wanted to write a little bit about the subject as well.

Vaikka en tällä hetkellä koe yksinäisyyden tunteita kuin ihan todella todella harvoin (päinvastoin, otin muun muassa muutama viikko sitten muutaman päivän ihan vain itselleni koska tuntui siltä että tarvitsin sitä juuri silloin), oli tilanne täysin erilainen erityisesti kaksi vuotta sitten ensimmäisen yliopistovuoteni jälkeisenä kesälomana.

Although at the moment I don't really experience feelings of loneliness, other than very very rarely (quite the contrary actually, a few weeks ago I had to take a few days just for myself because I felt like that's what I needed right then), the situation was totally different two years ago on summer holiday after my first year at university.

I spent almost whole of the summer in Glasgow, and during that almost 5-month holiday I spent a total of approximately three weeks in Finland. I remember how after the first time I was in Finland that summer I returned to my teeny tiny room in student halls and I started to tear up. My summer holiday had barely reached the mid-point, and the thought about having to spend many many weeks basically completely on my own felt really tough. I lived in a huge student flat with seven other people, and although I got along with my flatmates none of them were 'my kind of people' in a way that I would've wanted to become a closer friend. I think it was just the following day of coming back to Glasgow when I already booked new flights to go home to Finland later on in the summer.

Not for me. Nykyään saatan laittaa kyllä rohkeammin viestiä vähän vieraammillekin tyypeille, mikä on varmasti osittain juurikin tämän pari vuotta sitten kokemani yksinäisyyden kautta opittua.

Forming close and tight relationships with people is not easy for me, and during my first year of uni I only developed one friendship like that. However, this friend in question (who is now the other one of my amazing flatmates too), headed off travelling for the summer and so I didn't actually have anyone in Glasgow that I could've messaged 'hey, wanna grab a coffee or go for a picnic?'. I have never been one to enjoy being in big groups of people or attend student parties or go clubbing etc., which is probably one of the reasons why I didn't form tight friendships with people during my first year at university. Because parties, drinking, clubbing and getting absolutely hammered seemed to be the only happenings offered to students. Not for me. Actually, one of my flatmates at the time asked me 'why don't you ever go anywhere?'. Although I know he didn't mean it in a bad way, his words definitely did hurt because, probably without him knowing it himself, he had hit me just where I felt the most vulnerable in at that time. One of my problems is also that I'm really bad at sending messages and getting in touch with people anyway. Nowadays I'm more confident though and might send a quick message to someone that I might even know that well, and I'm sure that is partly just because of the loneliness I experienced a couple of years ago.

So I spent my summer 2017 mostly in Glasgow, frustratedly trying to find a job and handing in my CV to here there and everywhere never to hear back from anyone. I tried to purposefully come up with things to do and places to go, just so I'd get myself outside. The only thing that kept me sane was blogging and social media. I could channel my energy and time to updating this blog, which brought at least some content and routine to my days. And connecting and interacting with others on Instagram made me feel a little bit less alone. Actually, all of the close friendships I now have with people I've met through the 'gram have been initiated during that summer 2017.

As I stated at the start of this post, right now I don't really experience feelings of loneliness at all. And I know that even if I was spending my summer in Glasgow this year, I currently have so many amazing friends there with whom I could spend time - just like here in Finland. And nowadays I've learnt to see that summer as an experience that taught me something. During those few months I learned a lot about myself, my needs, my drives and motivation, and me as a social human being. However, despite how much I learned, I never want to experience a summer like 2017 ever again. And I know that luckily I don't have to.

What thoughts do you have about loneliness? Have you ever experienced the same kind of feelings?

  1. This is so honest and raw Pinja, but such a good read. Thank you for sharing your story! It's so hard to read this as this feeling of loneliness is definitely something I can relate to myself. It's a feeling that comes back to me every now and again for me personally. I do feel like you are my long lost friend because we think the same about so many things such as not loving big crows, I'm horrible with staying in touch with people and am not one to party either. I am a major introvert myself and find it very hard to connect with new people in general. Loneliness teaches you so much about yourself and who you are as a person, so it sometimes isn't all too bad. It's also good to feel gratitude towards all the friendships you have already, as that's really what can drag you out of feeling lonely! xx

    1. Thank you so so much Laura! It was scary to hit publish on this, but knowing that you got something out of this and found my words relatable really made it worth it ❤️ I'm so sorry to hear that you go through these feelings, I 100% know what you're going through and I know it is not easy! And that is actually something I've been thinking about, like how you and I seem so similar and I actually feel like we ARE friends! Yet another thing to thank social media for, there's definitely more good to it than bad! And you're absolutely right, being on your own teaches you a lot about yourself, but I know it doesn't make it any easier. You know I'm always just a message away if you need someone to talk to ❤️ And thank you for your constant support, it really means the world for me! ❤️
