The Comparison Trap & Self Doubts

Lately the old but annoying acquaintance of comparison has made a comeback again. Although I do think that in a sense a certain kind of comparison can also be good for you and motivate you to constantly develop yourself and further your skills forwards, I also know that in the end negative kind of comparing yourself to others is pointless and does no good for anyone. With negative comparing I mean the kind where the success and accomplishments of others don't motivate you to push harder to achieve your own goals and aspirations, but bring you down and make you feel like you're in one way or another less than the other person. And in the worst case scenario that only leads to sucking the last bits of enthusiasm, inspiration and motivation out of you, and you end up not even wanting to try.

But oh boy how difficult it sometimes can be not to compare yourself to others. This blog, university, Instagram, life... Lately I've found myself comparing my choices and actions to those around me a bit too often, and that has only lead me to doubt myself and my abilities. Does anyone even read what I write? Is my content interesting enough? In which direction do I want to develop and take my content in the future? Is my dissertation actually making any sense? Am I being critical and analysing enough? Is my Instagram grid cohesive enough? Does it even need to be? What do I really want to do in the future? And what makes these thoughts a vicious cycle is the fact that I usually have a positive, motivated and inspired take on life, so these kind of feeling and thoughts feel even more annoying. And then it's just downhill from there.

I also know that it is totally normal to think and question the choices you make, but wouldn't it be amazing if it didn't lead to just even more questions and doubts? I talked about this briefly over on my Instagram Stories at the end of last week, and said how I haven't been feeling that good, motivated or inspired when it comes to the content I create. But like I mentioned in my little Story chat, I'm starting to feel a whole lot better again and last weekend I was actually feeling really positive about everything again. I rediscovered the spark, enthusiasm and desire that's been missing, and I couldn't have even imagined how good of a feeling that would be!

I think that part of this self doubt can also be put down to the current time of the year. Although I do really like the autumn/winter period with the darker nights and getting all cosy and hygge at home, there's no denying that it is a lot easier to stay positive and motivated when it's not cold and dark outside pretty much 24/7. Then again, I also think the festive period is such a lovely and inspiring time of the year, and luckily we're entering the full-on festive season just now. So you can be sure I'm going to be absorbing all the inspiration I can from all those pretty Christmas lights, songs and the general festive mood. And to concentrate only on doing, developing and furthering my own thing, without comparing to others around me.

  1. I made a promise to myself at the beginning of the year that I would stop falling into the comparison trap. However, it is so difficult to not do that sometimes, I failed miserably! x

    1. It really can be so difficult sometimes! But I think it's good that we are aware of it and acknowledge when it's happening and then we can just to let it pass without getting too caught up in it :) xx
