Guide to Combining Neutral Outfits

Blogia pidempään lukeneet tai Instagramissa seuranneet ovat varmasti huomanneet mun valtavan rakkauden neutraaleja värejä kohtaan. Beiget, ruskeat, valkoiset, harmaat, mustat ja muut neutraaliin väripalettiin lukeutuvat sävyt ovat mun heikkous, ja mun vaatekaappi näyttääkin hyvin värittömältä, muutamaa väripilkkua kuten hillittyä murrettua vihreää tai söpöä pastellista laventelia lukuunottamatta. 

If you've been reading my blog or following me on Instagram for even a little while longer, you must have noticed that I am greatly in fond of neutral colours. Beiges, browns, whites, greys, blacks and other tones that you can file under the neutral colour palette are my weakness. And that's why my wardrobe also looks very colourless, except for a couple of those pop of colour items in for example muted green tone or in lavender lilac.

Neutraalien värien yhdistäminen ja neutraalien asujen luominen ei kuitenkaan tarkoita sitä, että näyttäisi jotenkin tylsältä tai mitäänsanomattomalta. Päästä varpaisiin samaan väriin pukeutuminen on nyt pinnalla, mutta henkilökohtaisesti tykkään mielummin yhdistellä erilaisia neutraaleja sävyjä toisiinsa. Eri asia on sitten esimerkiksi vaikkapa tummanruskean hameen ja beigen yläosan kombo, jossa sävyt on kyllä samasta väriskaalasta mutta kuitenkin tarpeeksi erilaisia keskenään.

Combining neutral colours and putting together neutral outfits doesn't mean that you'd look bland or boring however. Dressing into the exact same colour from head to toe is very in just now, but personally I prefer combining different neutral tones with each other. Wearing for instance a dark brown skirt with a beige top is a different thing though, as the tones are from the same colour scheme but still different enough when compared with one another. 




Omien neutraalien asujeni tietynlaisena ohjenuorana pidän "kolmen sävyn sääntöä". Pyrin siis siihen, että asussa olisi kolmea eri väriä tai sävyä, koska silloin värejä on tarpeeksi että asu näyttää mielenkiintoiselta, mutta kokonaisuus pysyy kuitenkin hillittynä ja tyylikkäänä. Koen esimerkiksi usein, että täysin mustavalkoiset asukokonaisuudet ei jotenkin tunnu niin omalta, mutta heti kun siihen heittää vielä jonkin kolmannen värin mukaan niin johan on parempi ja mukavampi fiilis! Tähän täytyy tosin sanoa poikkeuksena kokomusta, joka puolestaan on niin pettämätön klassikko että se toimii aina. Ja näin kesän kynnyksellä on myös mainittava kaikki ihanat kukalliset kesämekot poikkeuksena sääntöön, koska ne nyt vain kuuluvat kesään. Tosin värikkäisiin kesämekkoihinkin yhdistän usein tasapainoksi esimerkiksi valkoisen pellavableiserin.

For my neutral outfits, I have this little guideline that you could simply refer to as the 'three tone rule'. What that means, is that I strive to have three different colours or tones in my outfits, because that's when the outfit is more interesting to look at, but everything still looks controlled and elegant. For example, personally I don't feel that comfortable wearing a black and white outfit, but when I add another neutral colour in, I instantly feel more like me! A couple of exceptions have to be mentioned though: all black as it is just such a timeless classic that never fails, and all the beautiful colourful and floral summer dresses are another exception to this rule of mine. But then again, with those colourful dresses I usually tend to throw for example a white linen blazer on top to balance it out. 

Tähän kolmen sävyn sääntöön on sitten helppo lähteä tarvittaessa lisäämään pienissä määrin vielä muita värisävyjä, oli ne sitten muita neutraaleja tai niitä väripilkkuja. Ja välillä se väripilkku saattaa olla ihan vain vaikkapa kirkkaanpunainen huulipuna, joka jo yksinään riittää tuomaan lisää väriä ja eloa kokonaisuuteen. 

Minkälaisia pukeutujia te olette? Suositteko neutraaleja, vai menettekö enemmän 'mitä värikkäämpi, sen parempi' -linjalla? 

It is easy to then add other colours, either neutrals or something brighter, into this 'three tone rule'. And sometimes that can be as simple thing as a bright red lipstick, which alone is perfectly enough to bring more colour and life to the outfit.
