Q&A: Studying Fashion & Studying Abroad

Now that study related posts and topics are current again with schools and unis starting back, I thought I'd do a little Q&A about my studies now that I've completely finished with them. I asked you to send in questions on Instagram about studying fashion and studying abroad, and here are my answers. I hope at least some of you will find this post helpful, informative or just entertaining, and if you have anything else you'd like me to answer then make sure to leave your question in the comments of this post!

Oliko hakuprosessi miten erilainen verrattuna Suomen yliopistoihin? // How did the application process differ from applying to Finnish universities?

The biggest difference is that there wasn't an entrance exam, which is something pretty much all universities in Finland have. Instead of the exam it was my high school diploma, matriculation examination diploma, references and motivation letter that determined me getting accepted. I know some universities and degrees also require a portfolio and IELTS test, but personally I didn't have to do either. I'd say the most important thing is/was that motivation letter, as it shows just how much you really want to study the degree you're applying for. The actual applying goes pretty much the same way in both countries, I think it's somewhere around 5 different unis/programmes you can apply for, and we have a similar platform to UCAS here in Finland.

Miksikä lopulta valmistuit, mikä on tutkintonimikkeesi? // What did you receive your degree in?

Lopullisessa tutkintotodistuksessa lukee "Bachelor of Arts in International Fashion Branding with First Class Honours".

My final degree certificate says 'Bachelor of Arts in International Fashion Branding with First Class Honours'.

Kaduitko koskaan ulkomailla opiskelua? // Did you ever regret studying abroad?

I'd be lying if I said that I never regretted studying abroad. There were times and moments when I would have preferred to be in Finland, for one reason or another. Sometimes it was because of personal reasons, other times purely because I felt it would have been easier to handle all those life admin things in Finland. But generally speaking and looking at the picture as a whole, I definitely don't regret studying abroad. It was my longtime dream, and it taught me a lot in more ways than one. I also think I grew, matured and got more independent than I would have if I had stayed in Finland.

Miten otit / otitko opiskellessa huomioon tulevaisuuden urahaaveet? // How did / did you take into account career dreams and aspirations when studying?

Studying fashion and studying abroad per se were my longtime dream anyway. At the start of my degree my career dreams and aspirations were still very much focused on working with fashion and doing fashion marketing, but over the course of my studies my dreams, aspirations and plans changed and widened a little bit. Although I still love fashion, and to say it in the most cliche way 'fashion is my passion', nowadays my career dreams and plans are more generally about influencer marketing, social media and PR, rather than being purely fashion focused. During my studies I tried to choose e.g. group project responsibilities surrounding these topics, and generally make choices that I thought would benefit my career the most when it was possible.
